i’ve said it before, and i’ll say it again, i’ll even scream it from the roof top – i LOVE nutella!  for a fun halloween snack, i decided to try my hand at nutella covered pretzels.  normally, one of my favorite snacks is dipping a pretzel rod straight into the jar.  this time however, i decided to get a little fancy and try to dip them and then decorate them for halloween!!

i wasn’t sure if it was going to work – i couldn’t find any recipes to help, other than those involving chocolate instead of nutella.  what i ended up doing was putting about a cup of nutella into a tall glass so that dipping would be easier.  i then microwaved it twice for 30 second intervals, stirring after each.  the texture at this point was perfect (although all i wanted to do was add some milk or ice cream and drink it straight from the glass – screw the pretzels!).

i had my toppings laid out on separate plates for rolling, after i had dipped the pretzels in the nutella.  one thing i would advise would be to hold the dipped pretzel for a minute or so before rolling it in your toppings so that the nutella can set a bit and not melt onto your topping plate.

i laid the topped pretzels onto a drying wrack before putting them into the fridge to harden, but i would put them straight onto a cookie sheet instead, then into the fridge – mine came out with indentations on the back from the wrack 😦  as for toppings, you can use whatever your heart desires… nuts, candy, sprinkles (these may work better than the colored sugar), crushed oreo, or even a drizzling of royal icing!  get creative, and enjoy them because this combo of nutella and pretzels will rock your world, i promise!!

What a great idea, I dip pretzels in nutella all the time, but I’ve never thought to decorate them. Chocolate and pretzels is such a great combination, particularly with nutella, since it can be a bit too sweet on its own.

This reminds me of a chocolate pretzel tart (with a layer of almond butter between the pretzel crust and chocolate ganache, yum) that I made last spring http://bowllicking.com/2011/04/26/chocolate-pretzel-tart/.

thanks nicole! i would love to figure out a way to make them so the nutella doesn’t get all gooey if they’re left out for too long… that was one downfall of the recipe, but boy were they delicious!

Hmmm. I don’t know, maybe if you made some sort of melted chocolate/nutella mixture? It wouldn’t have as strong of a nutella flavor, but the chocolate would help set it up I’d think, and chocolate covered pretzels are pretty delicious in their own right.
